Younger Mountain Lions Rescued within the Knick of Time

Two younger mountain lions would have drowned earlier this week if it hadn’t been for a daring rescue and the eager eyes of Mike Canterbury, a dam tender for the Pine River Irrigation District in Bayfield, Colorado.

In keeping with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Southwest Area, Canterbury was mere moments from releasing a flood of water from the Vallecito Reservoir when he noticed two younger mountain lions trapped within the spillway.

He referred to as CPW for help. Wildlife officer Ty Smith stepped in to try a rescue, however he had a troublesome job forward of him. The partitions of the spillway are fairly tall and steep.

Smith initially assumed he’d need to dart the mountain lions, however first, he tried dangling a rope to see in the event that they’d seize on. (They’re cats, in any case.) One did, and Smith was capable of pull the primary child lion as much as security. @CPW_SW wrote on X: “The primary mountain lion held onto the rope all the way in which to the highest of the spillway barrier and rapidly ran off into the woods.”

With half the mission achieved, wildlife officers doubtless hoped the second rescue would go simply as easily. It didn’t. The second mountain lion didn’t fall for the rope dangle.

After climbing down into the spillway, although, Smith proved the second mountain lion remains to be only a massive kitty by getting it within the rope in any case. Officers caught the lion in a catch pole and lifted it over the wall. After hiding underneath a truck for a couple of minutes, the second lion finally ran off within the route of its sibling.

It’s a contented ending for these two mountain lions, who had been almost within the improper place on the improper time.
